Thoracic Surgery

Traditional and minimally invasive chest surgery

Thoracic Surgery Services

Thoracic surgeons diagnose and treat conditions in the chest cavity. This includes disorders that affect the heart and lungs.

The conditions we manage range from benign diseases of the chest and lungs to lung cancer.

Treatments and Services

At Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Plymouth, we use laparoscopic surgery when possible. This minimally invasive technique uses tiny incisions instead of a large open cut. This technique avoids cracking and spreading the ribs to reach the chest cavity.

With minimally invasive surgery, your surgeon inserts tiny, flexible tools into the incisions. These devices hold cameras, lights and surgical equipment.

We also use video assisted thoracic surgery (VATS). VATS is the gold standard treatment for early-stage lung cancer. VATS gives your doctor a live video feed from inside your chest during surgery.

Benefits of a Minimally Invasive Approach

The benefits of minimally invasive techniques and VATS include:

  • Faster recovery
  • Less pain after surgery
  • Lower risk of complications
  • Reduced scarring
  • Shorter hospital stays
