About Our Pathology Department

The Pathology Department at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Plymouth plays an integral role in providing critical information about a patient’s diagnosis. At BID Plymouth, pathologists are part of a multidisciplinary team that meets regularly to discuss the overall care of the oncologic patients. Pathologists communicate with the patient’s treating physician frequently and welcome an open dialogue.

Pathology is the study of the nature, origin, progress and behavior of disease. When tissue is removed, either by biopsy or major surgery, it is sent to the Department of Pathology to be processed in a special manner. Pathologists study the tissue in context with the patient’s medical history and radiographic findings to identify if there is an abnormality, and if so, help to define how it may behave.

Many abnormalities are benign, but the findings often assist in guiding appropriate follow-up and/or treatment. In cases where there is a malignancy, Pathologists define the type of tumor and provide important information upon which therapy and prognosis will be based.

At BID Plymouth, pathologists have relationships with nationwide experts in many disease categories and will consult with these experts when needed.

The Pathology Department adheres to strict guidelines and are monitored by state and nationwide regulatory agencies to assure quality and safety.
