We have two medical/surgical telemetry units: 2 East and 3 South.

2 East is a 39-bed unit. We provide care to adult and geriatric patients with a focus on oncology and cardiac issues.

3 South is a 34-bed unit. We provide care to adult and geriatric patients with a focus on orthopedic and bariatric surgery care.

Our observation unit, 3 East, is a 16-bed observation unit. It has an additional 12 beds for medical/surgical patient overflow.

Our Senior Behavioral Health Center, 3 West, is a 19-bed, locked, geriatric psychiatric unit. Staff provide their own coverage when additional or replacement nursing staff are needed.

The ACE unit is a small, eight-bed unit. We care for elderly patients diagnosed with dementia. We also care for patients who: 

• Need acute care for various diagnoses.
• Suffer from acute onset mental status change that increases the risk for falls.

Continuing Care Nursery is an eight-bed nursery connected to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC). The unit is staffed with a board-certified neonatologist Monday through Friday and on call weekends. A pediatrician is available on call when a neonatologist is not in the hospital.

The nurses who staff this unit have experience caring for pre-term, late pre-term and full-term newborns. They also have breastfeeding, neonatal resuscitation and basic life support certification.

The CCC is a 13-bed critical care unit for adult and geriatric patients. Working together, we have prevented all hospital-acquired central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) or catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) infection since 2014.

We see over 46,000 patients annually in our ED. We are a designated Stroke Center and Percutaneous Coronary Intervention Lab.

The CHART grant supports our ED clinicians who work with community physicians to integrate behavioral and medical health care.

BID Plymouth ED nurses are certified in advanced cardiac life support (ACLS). Many ED nurses also have advanced training in pediatrics and trauma. Some are certified emergency nurses (CEN) through the Emergency Nurses’ Association.

Maternal Child Services, also known as The Birthplace, is a 12-bed, private room, labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum unit. This unit includes nurses who are experts at providing labor, delivery and postpartum care. This staff also has experience with newborn advanced fetal monitoring, breastfeeding education, neonatal resuscitation certification, advanced life support certification and operating room scrub and circulating roles.

We maintain a 1:1 nurse-to-patient ratio per national guidelines set by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN). This ratio applies to:

• Actively laboring women
• Patients receiving induction or augmentation of labor
• Patients receiving spinal or epidural pain relief

BIDMC and Children’s Hospital Boston provide care to patients and newborns needing tertiary care.

There are eight major and two minor operating rooms. A nurse functions in the role of the circulator with the surgical technician or in the role of scrub in these services:

• Ear, nose and throat

• Gynecology/obstetrics
• Neurosurgery
• Ophthalmology

• Annual competencies

BID Plymouth has a variety of outpatient services and centers of excellence. These include:

• Cancer Center
• Endoscopy
• Infusion Therapy
• Pain Management Center
• Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Center

This 12-room PACU provides coverage 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Nurses show competency by complying with:

• American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN) standards of practice
• Licensure
• Specialty certification
• Basic life support (BLS), advanced cardiovascular life support (ACLS) and pediatric advanced life support (PALS)
