Anesthesia Pre-Admission Testing

About the Pre-Admission Testing (PAT) Process

Our surgery program is designed with your comfort and convenience in mind; to provide safe, high-quality care that is efficient and close to home. Pre-Admission Testing (PAT) is an interview process prior to surgery to learn more about your medical history. This interview may include meeting with a nurse, an anesthesiologist, nurse anesthetist or nurse practitioner as well as conducting lab work, X-rays, EKG and physical therapy. Pre-admission testing is required of most patients who will be receiving anesthesia. Your surgeon’s office will schedule a pre-admission testing appointment at the hospital one to two weeks prior to your scheduled surgery when possible. Telephone interviews are an option for some patients. Children under 18 years must be accompanied to the appointment by a parent or legal guardian. In many instances, the PAT process may be completed in 60 to 90 minutes but may take up to two hours for patients with complicated medical histories or having major surgical procedures.

Please bring the completed Anesthesia Questionnaire with you to your Pre-Admission Testing appointment as this will expedite the process. This appointment may include any of the following:

  • Registration
  • Surgical nurse interview
  • Anesthesia interview
  • Laboratory
  • Radiology
  • EKG
  • Physical therapy consults, when indicated

Note: Please allow up to two hours for this appointment. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your appointment to complete registration.
