Our nurses care for patients in a range of areas. Learn more about these units and services below.
2 East is a 39-bed, medical/surgical telemetry unit, that provides care to adult and geriatric patients with a focus on oncology and cardiac issues. Staff care for patients with a wide variety of acute conditions and patients with multiple comorbidities.
3 East is a 16-bed observation unit with an additional 12 beds for medical/surgical patient overflow.

Registered and licensed practical nurses, certified nursing assistants, unit coordinators, nurse practitioners, social workers, occupational therapists, activity coordinators, dietitians, and a physician medical director staff the unit. As a closed nursing unit, staff provide their own coverage when additional or replacement nursing staff is needed.
The Acute Care for the Elderly (ACE) unit is a small 8-bed unit focused on meeting the needs of elderly patients that may be diagnosed with dementia and who may also need acute medical care for various diagnoses, or who suffer from acute onset mental status change creating an increased risk for falls. Keeping our at-risk elderly patients safe in an acute care medical setting is our top priority.
Continuing Care Nursery is an 8-bed nursery affiliated with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and staffed with a Board Certified Neonatologist Monday through Friday and on call weekends. A pediatrician is available on call during hours when neonatology is not in the hospital. All nursing staff must be competent in caring for preterm, late preterm and term newborns as well as breastfeeding, neonatal resuscitation, and basic life support certification.
Critical Care Center (CCC) is a 13-bed critical care unit with 24 hour intensivist coverage that serves adult and geriatric patients with medical and/or surgical issues. We are very proud to share that since 2014 not a single CCC patient has suffered from a hospital acquired CAUTI or CLABSI infection. This is a testament to the collaborative nature of the care provided by the CCC staff and their focus on patient safety.
As a community hospital emergency department (ED), we see greater than 46,000 patients annually. The population we serve ranges from the neonate to the elderly, with varying stages of physical, social, psychological and/or emotional issues. We are a designated Stroke Center as well as a designated Percutaneous Coronary Intervention Lab. In addition, BID Plymouth Hospital is a CHART grant recipient. The CHART grant funds help to support our ED clinicians in their collaborative work with community clinicians to integrate behavioral health care with medical care and thereby allow us to more effectively help the patients in our community seeking assistance with substance use and mental health issues. BID Plymouth ED nurses are Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certified and many have advanced training in pediatrics and trauma and/or are Certified Emergency Nurses (CEN) through the Emergency Nurses’ Association.
Maternal Child Services, also known as The Birthplace, is a 12-bed, private room, labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum unit that includes a nursery staffed by obstetricians, certified nurse midwives, pediatricians, neonatologists, and registered nurses. Registered nurses are required to demonstrate competent care of the patient in labor, delivery, postpartum and newborn advanced fetal monitoring, breastfeeding education, neonatal resuscitation certification, advanced life support certification, and the OR scrub and circulating roles. Staffing levels meet or exceed the national ACOG/AWHONN recommendations with 1:1 nurse/patient ratio provided to actively laboring women, patients receiving induction or augmentation of labor and patients receiving spinal or epidural analgesia. We have a maternal and newborn collaboration agreement with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Children’s Hospital Boston to facilitate transfer of patients and/or newborns needing tertiary services.
