VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean)

The providers and hospital staff of Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital Plymouth Ob/Gyn and Midwifery are committed to providing patients with the best, safest options for their delivery. Women who had one cesarean delivery in the past have the option to plan a second cesarean or to plan a Trial of Labor after Cesarean. There are risks and benefits to each, and we will help you make the decision that is right for you and your family.

If you select a trial of labor, we suggest calling when contractions are regular and uncomfortable, so that we can monitor your baby. Women who have had a previous cesarean have a uterine scar, which rarely (<1%) can give way and result in uterine rupture. We are cautious in managing your labor, requesting continuous monitoring, limiting the length of your pregnancy and labor, and avoiding induction of labor. We have an excellent success rate (91%) and will book a consultation with the Chief of Ob/Gyn if you are interested in TOLAC.
