Diabetes / Endocrinology


Patients with diabetes are cared for using a patient-centered, team-based approach based on national standards. Patients with types 1 and 2 and gestational diabetes are treated using all currently available medications and devices, including insulin pumps.


The Endocrinology division cares for patients with hormonal disorders. The most common conditions are:

  • diabetes
  • thyroid (over and under activity, thyroid nodules)
  • calcium/bone problems (osteoporosis)
  • pituitary and adrenal gland and sex hormone issues

Living a Healthy Life; Turning Knowledge into Action

Beth Israel Deaconess - Plymouth provides several diabetes education programs for people living with diabetes. Although each program has a different focus, all of them follow the American Diabetes Association guidelines and are taught by certified diabetes educators and registered dietitians. Some of the general information covered in each program includes:

  • What is diabetes
  • Learning to live with diabetes
  • Proper nutrition and meal planning to manage blood glucose
  • Exercise as a treatment for diabetes
  • Medications for treating diabetes
  • Blood glucose monitoring
  • Complications of diabetes
  • Stress management and lifestyle modification

In addition, personalized goal planning for each participant is provided along with a one-hour nutrition consultation.

Self-Management Skills for Adults Learning About Diabetes (SALAD)

This is a 10 hour education program consisting of an individual appointment with a certified diabetes educator (CDE) and five group classes also taught by a CDE. Emphasis is placed on helping adults to understand and live with diabetes. A physician referral is required to participate in the program. Please call 508-830-2446 for more information.

Gestational Diabetes Education (Diabetes during Pregnancy)

This is a two-hour individual appointment scheduled upon physician request. Participants learn about gestational diabetes, blood glucose monitoring, nutrition and exercise guidelines, and follow-up care. Insulin administration is taught if requested by your physician.

Medical Nutrition Therapy

An individual one-hour appointment with a registered dietitian for nutritional assistance with pre-diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, and/or an elevated cholesterol level can be arranged with a referral from your physician.

Insulin Administration

This is an individual appointment with a certified diabetes educator to assist patients new to insulin therapy or with changes to existing treatment. On-going blood glucose monitoring and insulin titration is available during the transition period. For those patients using insulin pump therapy, adjustments to pump settings is available. A physician referral is required for these services.

Diabetes Support Group

This group meets monthly and is open to the general public. Please see Support Groups for more information.

Free Blood Glucose Meters

Free blood glucose meters are available to people participating in our diabetes education programs. Contact the diabetes education office at 508-830-2446 for more information.

  • Take exit 9 off route 3
  • Take a left at the end of the exit ramp onto route 3A. Follow route 3A for approximately 1-½ miles until you reach your first set of lights
  • Take a left at the set of lights and enter Cordage Commerce Center
  • Bear right and go around to the side of the building heading toward The Mill Store
  • There is a green metal awning on your left and the parking lot is on your right
  • Enter the building through the door with the green metal awning
  • The elevator is on your right. Take the elevator up to the 3rd floor
  • Take a right off the elevator. There are signs to direct you to suite 314
