Cancer Registry

The Cancer Registry at Beth Israel Deaconess - Plymouth collects valuable data for physicians, researchers and hospital administrators about the hospital’s cancer patient population. Data on patient demographics, past medical, family, and social history, diagnostic work-up and treatment are all carefully collected and entered into a comprehensive data base to allow for analysis and reporting. Data collected at the local level is transmitted to the Massachusetts Cancer Registry to allow for state-wide analysis and from there to the National Cancer Institute where national cancer-related data is gathered and used by researchers and legislators alike.

To assist in assessing the effectiveness of cancer treatments, cancer registrars also obtain follow-up information from physicians treating patients at least annually to monitor for recurrence or progression of disease and subsequent treatments. This helps to insure that our patients are scheduled for regular monitoring by their physicians.

Our nationally certified cancer registry staff participates in cancer conferences and meetings to promote use of cancer registry data. Cancer registry staff also coordinates activities within the cancer program to insure that standards for accreditation by the Commission on Cancer are met and often exceeded. The Beth Israel Deaconess - Plymouth Cancer Program was recently awarded a three-year accreditation with commendation as a Comprehensive Community Hospital Cancer Program by the Commission on Cancer.
