CANCER CARE KNOWN LOCALLY. RECOGNIZED NATIONALLY.
Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Plymouth’s Cancer Program has been named a recipient of the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer (CoC) 2015 Outstanding Achievement Award.
This prestigious award, which acknowledges cancer programs that provide the highest quality care to cancer patients, was presented to a select group of accredited programs across the country, including two in Massachusetts. The number of hospitals that received this award represents fewer than 12 percent of programs surveyed nationally.
The purpose of the award is to raise the bar on quality cancer care, with the ultimate goal of increasing awareness about high-quality, patient-centered care.
- Recognizes cancer programs that achieve excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients.
- Motivates other cancer programs to work toward improving their level of care.
- Encourages award recipients and health care professionals at other cancer facilities to share best practices.
- Encourages honorees to serve as quality-care resources to other cancer programs.
“Receiving the Outstanding Achievement award is a great accomplishment for the Cancer Center and is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff,” said Cancer Center Medical Director Dr. Matthew Koomey. “We’re proud to be recognized as one of two cancer programs in Massachusetts to receive this recognition.”
To receive this honor, programs are evaluated by a physician surveyor on 34 cancer program standards categorized within four cancer program activity areas, such as cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical services, and quality improvement. Seven of the 34 standards are evaluated as to whether they will receive commendation.
Award recipients must have received commendation ratings in all of those seven commendation standards, in addition to receiving a compliance rating for each of the other 27 cancer program standards.
