BID-Plymouth Launches Small Changes Dining Program
The British Beer Company is the first restaurant to participate in new program. Our promotional video outlining the program can be viewed HERE
Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Plymouth and Healthy Plymouth have launched a healthy dining program called Small Changes. The Small Changes program supports healthy dining by working with local restaurants to make better food and drink options available to customers. By providing the opportunity to make small changes, the restaurant is helping to “make the healthy choice an easy choice” for their customers. The British Beer Company is the first restaurant to adopt the Small Changes healthy food options program.
“Restaurants that participate in Small Changes are committed to offering their customers healthy options,” said Marcia Richards, BID-Plymouth Dietitian and Healthy Plymouth Nutrition Facilitator. “Participating restaurants help a customer save half their calories by requesting half-portions, make it easy to lower calories, fat, and sodium by substituting higher calorie fries with a vegetable, and offer whole grains.”
When a restaurant joins the Small Changes program, BID-Plymouth’s Marcia Richards works with a restaurant’s Lead Chef to perform a nutrient analysis to identify which offerings are healthiest. These options are then highlighted on a menu insert so restaurant patrons who are looking for a meal that is lower in calories, fat, and sodium can more readily find them. Restaurants can also adopt simpler changes including offering “half-to-go” before eating, having a vegetable in place of fries, and providing whole grains and low fat milk.
“The British Beer Company’s menu already had a variety of healthy menu items, by highlighting these choices we hope to help our guests make small changes for a healthier lifestyle. The British Beer Company has something for everyone in the family. Phil Clark, our Head Chef from the Cedarville Pub even made the connection that some of the menu items featured are paleo friendly items and also provide healthy carbohydrates including whole grains and fresh vegetables. A trifecta of healthy eating!,” said Lisa Fosdick, British Beer Company, Director of Marketing.
The British Beer Company, along with BID-Plymouth and Healthy Plymouth, will host a Small Changes kick-off event on Wednesday, September 28 at the BBC in Pembroke, MA. Other BBC locations offering the Small Changes healthy food options include: Cedarville, Sandwich, Falmouth, and Hyannis.
