ETHICS SUPPORT COMMITTEE AND CONSULTATIVE SERVICE
The Ethics Support Committee (ESC) is a multidisciplinary group comprised of staff members from the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Plymouth (BID-Plymouth). The ESC convenes regularly to review clinical cases or other ethical questions that have been brought forth within BID-Plymouth, as well as to develop educational initiatives for hospital staff and the greater Plymouth community.
The Consultative Service provided by the ESC is an advisory support service designed to assist patients, families, and all health care professionals in identifying, analyzing and resolving ethical dilemmas as they arise. Using a traditional clinical approach, consults are conducted by a multidisciplinary team led by a trained physician-ethicist.
Common examples of appropriate consultations for the ESC team include:
- Clarifying patient or family preferences of values
- Assisting in evaluating a patient's competence
- Assisting in decisions about foregoing life-sustaining treatment
- Assisting with identification of morally appropriate treatment options
Please see the Ethics Consultations FAQ page for specific information.
