Head and Neck Cancer

Prompt Diagnosis. Prompt Treatment. Outstanding Care.
Head and neck cancers may grow quickly if left untreated. The earlier that a cancer is diagnosed, the more likely the treatment will be successful. Physicians from surgery, medical oncology and radiation oncology, pathology, and radiology work together as a team to develop the best treatment plan for each patient. Patient cases are presented at Tumor Board where our comprehensive team meets to discuss the best course of treatment.

A Team Approach
The best treatment for head and neck cancers is guided by a team of specialists. Beth Israel Deaconess - Plymouth’s nationally recognized program and expert cancer team includes surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, physical and speech therapists, and other specialists who provide compassionate, coordinated care. Our team is recognized by patients and their families for our extraordinary dedication to helping patients maintain the best possible quality of life during and after treatment.

Surgery
Our nationally-recognized and academic medical center-trained surgeons have extensive experience with both malignant and benign lesions of the head and neck particularly with thyroid and parathyroid cancers, cancers of the larynx, salivary glands, oral cavity including tongue, skull base and regional cancer spread to the neck. Their philosophy is always focused on minimally invasive techniques and organ preservation employing chemotherapy and radiation therapy often as first line modalities reserving surgery for treatment failures in the case of malignant disease. They employ a variety of reconstructive techniques including regional and free tissue flaps.

Chemotherapy
Our medical oncologists use chemotherapy in a variety of ways for head and neck cancer. It may be used before, during or after surgery and radiation therapy. Chemotherapy is a systemic treatment where drugs enter the body through the blood stream and stop the growth of cancer cells. We participate in nationally sponsored clinical trials.

Radiation Therapy
Our radiation oncologists use sophisticated methods and machines to deliver precise treatments that target tumors while sparing healthy tissue. We offer intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) to treat head and neck cancer. This allows for precise contouring of the tumor and targeting the exact location of the tumor.

Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation during and after treatment is an important part of the overall care plan. Many patients may find their speech, swallowing, or other functions become more difficult. Our patients work with speech pathologists, therapists, dietitians, and other experts to improve their chances of making a full recovery.
