Beth Israel Deaconess - Plymouth Aims to Be
More Than a Community Hospital

Surgical DepartmentThe hospital maintains eight full-service operating rooms and two minor ambulatory care operating rooms. There are 25 pre and post anesthesia beds that provide the utmost in patient comfort and confidentiality. The hospital has 34 board certified surgeons on staff, representing and including major surgical specialties such as neurosurgery, urology, vascular, plastic, orthopedic, ophthalmology, hand, ENT, podiatry, gynecology/obstetrical, laparoscopic and general surgery, and pacemaker insertion.

The scope of surgical procedures continues to grow with each passing year and in many ways, Beth Israel Deaconess - Plymouth has been on the cutting edge in performing many complex surgical procedures. In the mid 1990’s, Beth Israel Deaconess - Plymouth was the first site in New England to perform radio frequency treatment for sleep apnea drawing patients from as far away as New York and Connecticut. In the late 1990’s, a Beth Israel Deaconess - Plymouth orthopedic surgeon performed a total hip replacement procedure live on the World Wide Web.

Today, surgeons are conducting trials and evaluating the latest three-dimensional navigational systems and devices designed for use during total knee replacement surgery. Soon trials of sophisticated navigational systems will be conducted for head (skull base) and spine surgery. This equipment includes image guided technology to “map” the surgical field, and track surgical instruments and implants when manipulated within the patient’s body.

Other notable accomplishments include the placement of stimulation devices in the spine for pain control and new surgical treatments for prostate cancer using nerve-sparing techniques for penile function preservation and other prostate disorders. Beth Israel Deaconess - Plymouth surgeons are also involved in National Institute of Health (NIH) protocols to evaluate cancer lymph node sampling techniques for head and neck cancers as well as breast cancer studies.

In the hospital’s expansion plans, construction in the Surgical Services Department was one of the main areas of focus. The waiting area is more comfortable for families.
It includes eight new full-service operating suites. The Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) and Day Surgery Unit (DSU) are adjacent for increased efficiency. Central Sterile Supply Services has expanded and relocated to enhance workflow.
