BID-Plymouth Recognized for Advancing Electronic Medical Records
BID-Plymouth is one of only 35 hospitals in Massachusetts to have earned this distinction
BID-Plymouth is proud to announce that it is one of a handful of hospitals South of Boston to have achieved advanced Electronic Medical Records recognition from the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). The recognition is for achieving Stage 6 on the EMR Adoption ModelSM (EMRAM). EMRAM was developed for evaluating the progress and impact of electronic medical record systems for hospitals tracked by HIMSS Analytics. Hospitals’ electronic medical records (EMR) system progress is tracked through eight stages (0-7), with Stage 7 -- an advanced electronic patient record environment -- being the highest.
“We have consistently invested in improving our EMR systems to support patient care, optimize patient safety and to benefit hospital operations. To earn Stage 6 recognition from HIMSS affirms that our investments are paying off” said Ron Rutherford, RN, Vice President and Chief Information Officer.
A Stage 6 designation indicates that a hospital has made a major commitment and investment to improving patient care through EMR. At BID-Plymouth, health records are almost fully-automated/paperless across all care settings. Electronic medical records allow physicians and nurses to document patients’ vital signs, order tests and review results, and choose and order medications. By moving health records online, BID-Plymouth ensures that patient records are legible, accurate and up-to-date, and easily accessed by medical staff across the hospital.
“HIMSS Analytics congratulates Beth Israel Deaconess-Plymouth for making significant progress towards achieving advanced health IT adoption,” said John H. Daniels, CNM, FACHE, FHIMSS, CPHIMS, Global Vice President, HIMSS Analytics. “Stage 6 represents a level of sophistication that can lead to innovative healthcare transformation.”
Implementing EMR has yielded improvements in the quality of care and hospital management. For example, one of the components of EMR adoption that BID-Plymouth has implemented in order to reach Stage 6 recognition is called closed loop medication administration. This means that when a patient is being given a dose of medication their hospital id bracelet and the medication are both electronically scanned. The computer then cross-references that patient’s electronic health record to make sure they are being given the correct medicine in the correct dose and form and that it does not conflict with any other medications, dietary restrictions, or upcoming tests. This type of EMR integration promotes patient safety and helps to improve the overall quality of care, as well as streamlining the medication dispensation process.
BID-Plymouth joins BID-Milton as the only Beth Israel Deaconess member hospitals to have achieved Stage 6 on the EMR Adoption Model.
